UT Austin Sigma Chi Fraternity Sued Over Pledge's Suicide

Sheryl Roberts-Updike and Lee Updike filed the wrongful death suit against the Sigma Chi fraternity's Alpha Nu chapter on Nov. 20, alleging their son was subjected to "horrific hazing" that led to a "psychological crisis that ended in suicide," People'reports. "The fraternity brothers forcefully dominated over pledges and supplied them with and directed, encouraged, and/or forced them to consume illegal controlled substances," the lawsuit said. The lawsuit is seeking monetary damages in excess of $1,000,000 for physical and mental injuries. The county currently has the Incarceration Facility, a minimum-security unit that opened in 1999 between Troy and Piqua, along with a maximum-security facility built in downtown Troy at the county Safety Building in the early 1970s. The proposal calls, for reuse of the Incarceration Facility's beds, its lobby, laundry and food service areas, among others.
